This is an adaptive recreation directory, not a general recreation directory. Every listing exists because there is verified adaptive programming, adaptive equipment, or a specific accessibility feature that makes recreation possible.

We don't list ordinary ski areas, bike shops, trails, outfitters, or gyms just because someone with a disability might be able to use them. And when nothing verified exists yet, we say so — a gap is useful information, not an embarrassment.

Para-nordic skiing is the strongest verified adaptive snow opportunity in Marquette County today. Adaptive alpine is what Marquette Adaptive is working to add.

“Who made the sit-skis possible?”

NMU Engineering Technology faculty built four nordic sit-skis for the Superiorland Ski Club adaptive program, developed to expand nordic skiing for children with disabilities.
Superiorland Ski Club operates the program. NMU helped create the adaptive equipment that makes it possible.
This is the model we believe in: one organization doesn't have to do everything. Different organizations can bring different pieces of the solution.

We are working to expand adaptive alpine skiing opportunities for our founding winter.
This is not an operational program yet. Qualified instruction, adaptive equipment, insurance, location, program leadership, participant process, pricing, and operational arrangements all have to be confirmed first.

Adaptive bikes exist in Marquette through SAIL's SPAR program. What we don't yet have is a clear public picture of inventory, borrowing, and adaptive mountain biking.

SPAR (Social Physical Accessible Recreation) currently operates accessible biking activities in Marquette.
Published 2026 SPAR Summer Biking Club information: adaptive bikes are available, no experience is needed, and SPAR events are free.

We are collecting verified detail on parking, restroom accessibility, the route to the launch, and surfaces along the way.

An accessible launch does not mean adaptive instruction is provided, adaptive kayaks are available, assistance is on site, or that every paddler can use it independently.

SPAR stands for Social Physical Accessible Recreation. SAIL describes it as a health and wellness program for people of all abilities, with accessibility intentionally considered in program design.
