Marquette Adaptive exists to make more adaptive outdoor recreation possible in Marquette County — by building what's missing, strengthening what already works, and connecting people to it.

Kirsten Alburg
Founder & Program Director
Kirsten has volunteered with adaptive sports programs and organizations for roughly three decades. Marquette Adaptive is her effort to use that experience, her relationships, and her professional skills to do something useful for the place she calls home.
Her role is convener, builder, program developer, partner, and resource connector — not the center of every success. She founded Marquette Adaptive and took the lead on getting it moving; the adventure belongs to the participant, and the credit belongs to everyone who earned it.
Adaptive recreation is also personal. Her nephew is nonspeaking autistic and loves to surf. Watching someone she loves experience the joy of doing something he genuinely enjoys reinforced what she already believed: access to recreation matters.
How we're structured
Community-powered. Team-built. Privately owned. Professionally run.
Marquette Adaptive is currently a locally owned, for-profit social enterprise. It is not a nonprofit, and payments made directly to Marquette Adaptive should not be assumed to be charitable or tax deductible.
The community powers this work through skills, advice, volunteering, and partnership — and gets full credit for it. Contribution doesn't create ownership, governance, equity, or financial control. Community input comes through the advisory-only Community Advisory Circle.
